SCCM / Application Packaging / Basics

What is Application Packaging?

Application Packaging is the process of creating standardized software installation packages for the applications that need to be installed on the computers in your network. Standardizing means that each computer/user gets the same configuration and customization when the application is installed.

Why do I need to know about Application Packaging?

If you’re responsible for installing applications on hundreds/thousands of computers, application packaging will help you steal back the time you spend installing and configuring each install manually.

How does Application Packaging work?

When you package an application, your objectives are to:

  • Determine installer behavior
  • Discover silent/unattended installer switches
  • Create an answer file or transform (if the installer behavior needs to be modified)
  • Test installer switches
  • Automate the software deployment and installation process
  • Document!

A goal of Application Packaging is to create a standardized software installation that can be deployed using Group Policy, Active Directory, and commercial deployment tools such as SCCM and Altiris.

What will I learn in this course?

In the SCCM Application Packaging Course you will learn:

  • The different installer types (.msi, .exe)
  • The first steps to take when packaging an application
  • How to determine installer behavior
  • How to discover installer switches
  • How to create an answer file or transform
  • How to test installer switches
  • How to test a basic deployment using psexec
  • How to document your work
